Displaced Mass

33°57'40.0"N 118°27'12.0"W

h.2' x w.1' x d.2'

Intro

Sited within the monotonous expanse of the beach’s backshore, Displaced Mass involves the extraction of a single square foot of sand. The removed material is altered from its initially formless condition into a cube and placed adjacent to its site of extraction, establishing a direct juxtaposition between presence and absence. While the sand is rendered into a rigid volume, the void left behind reveals sharply defined, solid walls. Together, the constructed mass and the pit of extraction prompt a reconsideration of what constitutes form, suggesting that absence may assert as much structure as material itself.
